PINT A POINT CHESS

25 November 2004

This annual Bristol event no doubt takes place in dozens of Student Unions up and down the country - and if not, it should do!

The basic rule is that you must finish your current pint before you can win or draw a game. At the start each player has to choose a pint from a 'menu' of four drinks. After winning you get topped up with another pint, or half if you draw.

Matt the multi-tasking controller has to phone through the orders to the bar. What on earth did they do in the pre-mobile era?

A crisis about to occur: with only a few seconds each Mike has difficulty finishing his drink. Although both flags fall the evidence is clear to see and Jonathan wins.

Some players start to flag towards the end, but at the top of the tournament it's business as usual.
